I thought it was to save disk space, uncompressed digitized audio can eat up a lot of storage space (especially if sampled at a higher rate. I seem to remember Reader Rabbit being particular clear, a lot more so than say The Ugly Duckling).

Ah well, just another weird oddity of software that required a GS, but had *IIe* specific features! Reminds me of John Elway's Quarterback that played digitized speech WITHOUT the Ensoniq chip...that's right, just simple speaker toggling like in early 8-bit Apple II games. Gauntlet and Paperboy were even weirder, the Ensoniq was used for music, but not for sound effects, which were beeps and clicks generated by the internal speaker.

I think they used double-hires mode to save memory - Reader Rabbit only requires 256k of RAM to run.

I found it does boot up and run under KEGS32 (Windows port), the introduction page appears and speaks, as does the selection menu screen. Problem is once you start a game, it gets stuck on the first spoken word--just repeats over and over like a skipping record.

Excellent use of digitized speech back then, but I'll never understand why they choose to use Double-Hi-Res graphics in a GS-specific program (maybe they were inspired by the original Tour of the IIgs?).

Heya Jay,

unfortunately, in my experience at least, Reader Rabbit seems to be one of those programs that simply refuses to run under emulation. I've not been able to run the program using either KEGS, Sweet 16 or Bernie ][ the Rescue.

Can't get Reader Rabbit to load onto KEGS32. Has anyone managed to get a version that works, or figure a way to get it to work on this emulator?
