That's unusual that your 'Tools' folder would be doing that, but the solution SHOULD be easy. Simply select the 'Tools' folder icon and get info (command-I). Find the 'Locked' checkbox and click on it, so the checkbox is no longer crossed.

Additionally, it's possible that your system folder or even the system boot volume you're using is locked. Get info on both the system folder and the volume itself to ensure it's not locked.

Additionally, are you emulating a IIGS or running a real one? If you're on a real machine, and your system disk is a floppy, ensure the write protect notch is set to allow writing to the disk.

As a last piece of help, you can download the hard drive image I've set up with System 6.0.1 (and almost every freeware and shareware game ever known). Additionally, I've also preloaded every system tool released, so you should be able to run the Bard's Tale without having to copy over Tool35 to a system disk:

http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/files/harddrive_image.zip

Hope this helps

- Alex

Posted to: Bard's Tale questions Show Thread | Post Reply

I'm trying to get the enhanced gs/os version to work. The problem is when I try to copy the tool file it wants copied, I am running into it complaining that my system tools dir is write protected. How do I get around this?

Posted to: Bard's Tale questions Show Thread | Post Reply

Ah, sneaky. Should've known. I kept trying apple S but it seemed like the game was just glitching and doing nothing instead of saving. Thanks. That will save me a lot of time.

Posted to: Bard's Tale questions Show Thread | Post Reply

We've got most things on 'What is the Apple IIGS?' ;-)

How to save a game anywhere? Easy. If you move the mouse cursor to the top of the screen and click where the menu bar would normally be, it will appear. From there, you can save games. Or you can just hit the standard 'open-apple S' to save.

- Alex

Posted to: Bard's Tale questions Show Thread | Post Reply

Thanks, I didn't know the archive here had the GS/OS version. Okay, last question if you or anyone can answer. How do you save in Bard's Tale 1 outside of the guild? I know you could in 2, and I thought you couldn't in 1, but looking at the GS/OS version of Bard's Tale 1, I see that I somehow created save game files whenever I messed with this years ago, and I see an option to load those games. I can't figure out how I did it. I searched google, and quick reference cards, manuals, walkthroughs, and pressed every key on my keyboard but haven't figured it out yet.

Posted to: Bard's Tale questions Show Thread | Post Reply

Both the 2image archives for both the Bard's Tale I and II include both the original ProDOS 8 versions as well as the GS/OS versions:

http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/bard-s-tale-i-tales-of-the-unknown-the

http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/bard-s-tale-ii-the-destiny-knight-the

You'll also find the original manuals and official hint books!

Bard's Tale III was developed by Burger Becky Heineman, although never released, much to the misfortune of IIGS gamers thanks to rights issues and Interplay breaking away from Electronic Arts. This is, however, the 8-bit version of Bard's Tale III, which was originally released on 4 5.25" floppies, but was also available as a single, much more convenient, 3.5" disk.

Shift booting works only with System 6 on the IIGS, from memory, but yes, it's exactly the same as on the Mac and safe booting with Windows.

KEGS is the best emulator to play games with, it's more compatible than any other emulator, so stick with it.

- Alex

Posted to: Bard's Tale questions Show Thread | Post Reply

Seems to be working better with the latest KEGS. A lot of my GS/OS Bard's Tale problems seemed to be caused by the image being write-protected. I couldn't figure out how to unlock it or create a fresh blank disk, so I just erased an old save disk and copied the files over.

Posted to: Bard's Tale questions Show Thread | Post Reply

Ah... so you have the GS/OS one? I don't even remember where I found them and wasn't even sure if they were official versions since I can never find info about them.

Is shift booting like with the Mac where it starts without extensions? I didn't even know GS/OS had that? Would it matter what version I'm running?

I'll have to experiment some more. I have Windows, so it looks like I'm stuck with KEGS, which I don't think has been updated in years.

Any idea if Bard's Tale III was actually released for the IIgs? I didn't think it was, but I noticed on virtualapple, they have it listed, but it's either improperly linked or a cruel joke because it doesn't load and the download links don't work.

Posted to: Bard's Tale questions Show Thread | Post Reply

I just had a quick go on my real IIGS and with Sweet 16 v2.1.3.

Sweet 16 seemed to freeze up a lot, just getting out of the Adventurers Guild. I had no such problem running it from a Flash Card on my real IIGS. Didn't get as far as specifically trying healing at a temple.

Try shift-booting to see if that helps, but otherwise these GS/OS were well coded to take advantage of GS/OS.

Haven't tried the original versions creating characters, because I've stuck with the characters originally included with the game and have built them up over the last 23 years

Sorry I couldn't be of much help!

- Alex

Posted to: Bard's Tale questions Show Thread | Post Reply

Bard's Tale questions

Has anyone played the versions of Bard's Tale and Bard's Tale 2 that run from a system disk and have "enhanced" sound? I can't find any information on them, but downloaded from a site a while ago and haven't seen them anyone else. They run from a single disk too instead of also using a character disk. I think I remember having trouble running them. The main problem I remember was sound loops when you get healed at a temple.

I had trouble with the original non-enhanced disks that I grew up with too. Annoying crashes. The most perplexing problem is whenever I roll a new character no matter which game it is, the game stops rolling random numbers and starts cycling through the same sets of stats. Anyone have that problem or know what the problem is? It seems to do it no matter what emulator I use. I've probably tried XGS, Bernie, and KEGS.

Posted to: Bard's Tale questions Show Thread | Post Reply
