I am indeed running it on a Rev. A IIgs with 4.25MB of RAM and CFFA storage. Both the floppy disk (with the write protect tab switched off) and the System 6 bootable versions do not save scores. Both allow you to enter your initials, but then a window pops up telling me high scores cannot be saved. They stick around on the board until I restart, then poof! Gone. I was only asking for keyboard shortcuts in the off-chance there was an "enable high score saving" option. A long shot for sure!

I can confirm Arkanoid for the IIGS supports high score saving. As a matter of fact, I have a copy of the original instructions (not in PDF, but an ASCII file typed out by Club 96 back in the day) and there's even a section about saving your high score:

"HIGH SCORE SCREEN -- Use the keyboard to enter your initials. Press RETURN to return to the title screen."

Obviously the disk cannot be write-protected, but here's another thought. Are any of the data files locked? Check in the Finder, look for the little lock icon next to the files, this essentially makes it read-only. Beyond that, the only other thing I could think of is your copy is corrupted.

Incidentally, there's a couple of other keyboard options: 'ESC' pauses game, Ctrl-R resets game, Left and Right arrows adjust volume level.

When you say booting from a floppy, do you mean on a real IIGS, or are you playing in emulation?

The real game certainly saves high scores. In high school my friend would visit of an afternoon and we'd play IIGS games. We'd play 2 player Arkanoid. And one day, we both made it to the last level of the game, for the 1st time, in our 2 player game. My friend won the game, and I died, but I got the slightly higher score, so for eternity there was dispute over whose accomplishment was greater. Anyway, both our names are still there in the no. 1 and no. 2 positions on the high score roster on my real floppy.

To me, it sounds more likely to be a basic 'locked disk' issue. Make sure your floppy, real or virtual, is not locked, as that will prevent saving data. Anyway, I hope you're lucky enough that this may be the solution.

I haven't used ADTPro myself, but yeah, I'm still having to go through my girlfriend's laptop to use CiderPress, because I always use a Mac.

I've had a look at the documentation and my original copy of Arkanoid included the 8-bit Apple II manual! But no matter, I think it's all relevant to the IIGS version, really.

What sort of settings were you after? I believe the only real settings are to quit (control-q) turn the sound off (control-s). I guess if you're wanting to speed up the VAUS (the paddle you hit the ball with) you would go into the IIGS control panel and specify the faster mouse speed in 'Options'.

If you want to cheat, I've included the Gamehacker CDA on the System 6 pre-install image available from this site's homepage. Gamehacker is available through hitting control-apple-escape as well, and simply searches the memory to see if it recognises what game you're currently playing and then patches the memory to give infinite lives and/or invulnerability.

Thanks, Alex. I'll have to give that other disk image a try when I have some free time. It's been a real chore getting my IIgs to network with anything. I plugged my compact flash card into a reader and used Ciderpress a while back to dump a bunch of ShrinkIt files onto it, but I don't have access to a Windows computer these days, and ADTPro just drops its connection after a few minutes.

Does the manual for Arkanoid happen to mention a settings screen? I was wondering if there was a keyboard shortcut for that.

Hmmm...Arkanoid should be automatically saving high scores. It's especially weird that it isn't if you're booting from the floppy. It could be an unfortunate side effect of the crack.

The manual for Arkanoid (as small as it is) will be on the site shortly, along with a tonne of other IIGS related manuals, but it won't help with the issue here.

Try the version on Virtual Apple, downloading the disk image in the right hand column:

Let the forum know if it works any better. It's great having two independent archives of IIGS software, because one copy may be better than another!

Arkanoid - how do you save high scores?

I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to save high scores in Arkanoid. After you enter your initials, a box pops up that says high scores are unable to be saved. I've tried booting from the Arkanoid floppy and also running from internal storage (Compact Flash card with GS/OS 6.0.1 installed), but no luck.

Maybe it's not possible? I can't seem to be able to track down a PDF of the instruction manual either.
