It was very playable in that screen size, and still a fair sized window.

Funny, thinking back, I'd forgotten how much influence I had in the game's background development, all because I _so_ much wanted to see Wolf 3D released when it clearly wasn't going to be. When it sat in limbo for a number of years, I ended up talking with Vitesse and BurgerBill, and eventually, I even got into several long e-mail discussions/debates with John Carmack about its feasibility (this was back in the early to mid 90's. I actually kept those e-mails, even back then it was cool speaking to the founder of id). Eventually I got hold of a leaked unfinished copy and showed it to the guys at Ninjaforce, after telling them how the translated Mac->GS graphics looked awful. That inspired Clue to redo the artwork (I even got to see it progress along the way, and gave my opinions). Once that was finally done, a copyright issue came up about reusing the Mac version's audio so I suggested Clue and Jesse get someone local to at least do the voices, their being German. If I remember right, one of them had their grandfather do the actual voices. Came out sounding better than even the original PC version! Somewhere between that I got Sheppy hooked up with the Ninjaforce guys.

Those were fun times!

Posted to: Anybody running Wolfenstein GS? Show Thread | Post Reply Mon, 22 Feb 2010 12:13:56 +0200 Mitchell Spector https://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/games-forum/show/324?start=0#post328 Re: Anybody running Wolfenstein GS? https://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/games-forum/show/324?start=0#post326 D'oh! I used to know that, Alex. I guess my brain only has so much space to store information! Everybody involved in WolfGS deserves kudos. It's such a cool "because I can" type of project.

Posted to: Anybody running Wolfenstein GS? Show Thread | Post Reply Thu, 18 Feb 2010 23:34:54 +0200 thefcpguy https://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/games-forum/show/324?start=0#post326 Re: Anybody running Wolfenstein GS? https://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/games-forum/show/324?start=0#post325 I can't run it at full screen on my 8Mhz zipped IIGS with 4.25meg of RAM - I wouldn't be surprised if you needed to run it at 12Mhz and up with the maximum amount of cache available to the ZipGSX or Transwarp GS.

It runs well under emulators that support it though!

id Software didn't actually port it, the port was started Burger Becky Heineman and finished by Eric Shepherd. Let's not forget the contribution of Ninja Force either, who made the GS version sound better than the original MS-DOS version and make the graphics look as good despite the 16 colours per scan line limitation of the IIGS.

- Alex

Posted to: Anybody running Wolfenstein GS? Show Thread | Post Reply Thu, 18 Feb 2010 23:26:47 +0200 Alex Lee https://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/games-forum/show/324?start=0#post325 Anybody running Wolfenstein GS? https://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/games-forum/show/324#post324 It seems that Wolfenstein GS needs hardware acceleration on an actual GS in order to run at any usable speed. Has anyone had success with this one? I think it's so cool that id ported that game to the GS at all!

Posted to: Anybody running Wolfenstein GS? Show Thread | Post Reply Thu, 18 Feb 2010 20:27:41 +0200 thefcpguy https://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/games-forum/show/324#post324
