I've come across that strange 'bug' about how Teach is missing. I deliberately don't include the Teach text editor so that the Hermes NDA will allow you to open text and Teach files by default (and to save space on each 32 meg ProDOS volume).

Basically, a way around it is to open Hermes manually (from the Apple menu) and from its 'File' pull down menu, go to 'Open' and select the Teach file that wasn't opening when double clicking on it. That'll do it.

Thanks a lot! I'll try those out!

InstantReplay has files that look like text files for how to use it, but when I try opening the Using.IRep file, it says "Teach" is not found. I searched for that program on this site and didn't find it. What program do I use to read such files?

Not sure if I should make a new topic for this question; it seems related enough to me. I think. Sorry if I should have made new for it.

Additionally,

I've just found 'Macromate' on the System Add-ons disk – it's available from the CDAs folder. You install it to a system disk just like the NDAs, however to configure 'Macromate', you'll need to enter the classic desk accessories panel by the key combo open-apple – control – escape.

I haven't used Macromate myself (or the NDAs to any large extent) but it does provide another potential solution.

Off the top of my head, there's one system add-on that should, hopefully, allow you to add keyboard macros to games.

From the homepage of the site, find the link to download the hard drive image 'System Add-ons'. This is a 32meg volume (the maximum size for a ProDOS volume) and with it, I've included every single system extension I can find.

If you go into its NDAs (New Desk Accessories) folder, and then go to 'Utils' there are a couple of desk accessories, that, once installed in the 'Desk.Accs' folder of your system, will give you the ability to add keyboard macros to any game or program that follows the standard Apple desktop user interface.

One is called 'Instant Replay' and includes three separate NDAs that you'll need to install. Another is older and is inside a folder called 'Macros', but the actual NDA is called 'KEYMAC'. It's much older than 'Instant Replay' but if it works, it works.

NB: a lot of games DON'T use the standard Apple GUI and desk accessories, but the GS/OS versions of Bard's Tale I and II do, so be sure to try it with those and not the original ProDOS 8 versions (both are included in the individual archives for these games). Dragon Wars supports NDAs, so you'll be able to use either NDA to record Macros.

Alternatively, you could download the hard drive image for Board Games and Role Playing Games (RPGs) from the homepage, which already has Bard I & II and Dragonwars already setup to play.

How to set up Macros for games?

I remember my father set up our IIgs to give games like Dragon Wars and the Bard's Tales to allow the number pad on the right of the keyboard to input a series of keys with one keypress. Many years later, our IIgs seems to not be working (or at least our hard drive isn't) and I was hoping to set that up on the KEGS Emulator I have for my Mac. I have no idea what program he used to do it, though, and my father is sadly deceased now.

Does anyone know how to do that?
