They look cool, with the benefit of not having to mess with an external device. I was going to try to make this work first since it came with the system so already have everything, and because it feels more "vintage".

Maybe if I can't resolve my issues, I'll lose that sentiment and go for one of those other options.

Thanks for the help!

Posted to: Hard Drive Help for a newbie Show Thread | Post Reply Tue, 30 Nov 2010 04:32:52 +0200 Holmes https://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/hardware-forum/show/374?start=0#post382 Re: Hard Drive Help for a newbie https://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/hardware-forum/show/374?start=0#post380 I'd be guessing the error message is cryptic because something's gone corrupt with the drive. Without booting into ProDOS or GS/OS proper, it won't be able to provide proper error messages and codes.

If you've got ANY drive diagnostic software (ProSel, Salvation Supreme, Universe Master - all available from this site under Apps - Utilities) you might be able to fix the problem with repair options.

But I'd also like to suggest again that a Focus, CFFA or MicroDrive and MicroDrive Turbo are great ways to go for mass storage on the IIGS. An extra cost yes, but they're faster, more reliable, quiet, require less space and you can quickly and easily copy over the hard drive partitions full of almost every hard drive installable program for the IIGS

- Alex

Posted to: Hard Drive Help for a newbie Show Thread | Post Reply Mon, 29 Nov 2010 22:38:58 +0200 Alex Lee https://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/hardware-forum/show/374?start=0#post380 Re: Hard Drive Help for a newbie https://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/hardware-forum/show/374?start=0#post377 Thank you. I'll go check it out.

Do you know why the error I'm getting looks so cryptic? Is that how error messages usually appear on a IIGS? It didn't even give me any sort of error message. It just looks like it jumped into some sort of assembler-debugger-memory address thing.

Posted to: Hard Drive Help for a newbie Show Thread | Post Reply Thu, 25 Nov 2010 03:09:21 +0200 Holmes https://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/hardware-forum/show/374?start=0#post377 Re: Hard Drive Help for a newbie https://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/hardware-forum/show/374?start=0#post375 I've unfortunately never owned a SCSI card for the IIGS, so I'm not sure what would be causing the problem (especially after it worked fine to begin with).

Just a minor point, but did you mean to say you booted from slot 5 when using 3.5" boot disks?

You should be able to find all the help you need regarding SCSI and the IIGS at:

http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.apple2

- Alex

Posted to: Hard Drive Help for a newbie Show Thread | Post Reply Wed, 24 Nov 2010 12:16:26 +0200 Alex Lee https://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/hardware-forum/show/374?start=0#post375 Hard Drive Help for a newbie https://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/hardware-forum/show/374#post374 Hi Everyone.

I have recently come into a beautiful Apple IIGS because I love vintage PCs, so I'm working through setting it up.

What I'm trying to do is boot it up off the external SCSI HD, which is connected via an Apple Fast SCSI Sandwich II card. I have never used the IIGS before, so maybe I'm doing something terribly wrong.

The person I bought it from sold me his whole setup (Apple IIGS, 5MB, SCSI card, external HD, 3.5 floppy, 5.25 floppy). When I first received it, it worked fine and booted off the HD. Now it doesn't.

When I try to boot it - from slot 7 (after starting up the HD first), it hits the HD, but on the "Copyright Apple Computer Inc. 1977-1989", "All right reserved.", "ROM Version 3." screen, it also pops up what looks like a cryptic hexadecimal error message as follows:

"00/73A5: 00 00 BRK 00
A=DD9B X=00EE Y=0002 S=01FD D=0000 P=81
B=00 K=00 M=0C Q=80 L=1 m=0 x=0 e=0
*"

And then everything I type gives me pages of hex messages and what looks like assember code.

I figured out how to get into the control panel and change my boot device to slot 6 (floppy), and was able to boot to ProDOS on 3.5 floppy. Once in there, I can see the HD partitions, and they look like they've got a valid system folder.

My HD is setup as SCSI ID 6. It does have an external terminator, and it's the same as when I first got it, and I don't know enough to have changed anything on it since then anyway (at least I don't think I do).

Can anyone help me? Can you explain what messages I'm getting when I try to boot the HD?

I do have a set of GS/OS install disks v 6.0.1.

Thanks!

Posted to: Hard Drive Help for a newbie Show Thread | Post Reply Wed, 24 Nov 2010 07:02:54 +0200 Holmes https://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/hardware-forum/show/374#post374
