Hello all,
I'm new to the IISG emulation. I'm running KEGS under OSX. Got it all up and running. Downloaded The Bards Tale from this site and can't seem to get the character disk to work. Anyone help out?
Most appreciated.

Welcome robbo007!
Firstly, what version of KEGS for OS X are you running? There are actually two different versions, one at:
http://kegs.sourceforge.net/
which is the latest version 0.91, and there's a more specific OS X build at:
http://www.casags.net/
but that's still based on version 0.65 of KEGS and is old.
I use 0.91 myself, which includes a basic user interface, which you can access with the F4 key. From there, go to 'Disk Configuration' and specify that the Bard's Tale game disk is in 's5d1' and that the character disk is in 's5d2'. When done, select 'Back to Main Config' and then 'Exit Config'.
Reboot your virtual IIGS within KEGS (control-command-F12) and the game should boot. When you get to the character options screen, choose 'Start Bard's Tale GS'. The program will then ask where it can find the character disk. Select 'Slot 5, Drive 2'. You will then find yourself in the Adventurer's Guild where you can now add characters to your party, or create new ones. I recommend the standard party however, especially as El Cid has the firehorn, an incredibly powerful weapon that will get you out of tough scrapes. Just be wary that the firehorn has a limited amount of uses, and should only be used in emergenices!
Happy adventuring!

Niceone Alex.
Character disk is now working.
I think the Amiga and IIgs version of the Bards Tale series are the best for graphics and sound. Was it only in mono? I only have one channel working?
Do you have by any chance Ultima I? I own them the original versions for IBM but not IIgs.
Thanks,
Rob

Yeah, Bard's Tale I for the IIGS is mono only, unfortunately.
But Bard's Tale II is stereo.
We might have to wait and see what happens with the rights issues to Ultima I GS, as it was licensed to Joe Kohn to sell, who recently passed away.

Think this will be the last question. Many thanks for the help.
Is there a way to copy files between OSX and KEGS 0.91? I'm trying to use a character from U1 IBM version to the IIGS version. Maybe this is not possible? But it would be worth a try as I've got quiet far in U1 IBM version.
Thanks,
Rob

I've been hesitant to mention my common method of transferring files between OS X and disk images, but what the hell!
I use a program called ADFS. It's rather old and hasn't been updated in years, but effectively, it will enable you to copy items from your HFS+ formatted volume to a ProDOS formatted disk image.
I've found it still works with Leopard and Snow Leopard on Intel Macs (you'll need to have Rosetta installed), although drag and drop copying has stopped working - you'll need to use the pull down menus from within ADFS to specify copying files over.
The download link is here:
http://www.lazilong.com/apple_II/adfs/downloads/ADFS.Carbon.sit
You can also download a Universal binary of the application, but I found it didn't work at all for me with Leopard and Snow Leopard:
http://www.lazilong.com/apple_II/adfs/downloads/
ADFS is fairly buggy and it's caused problems for some of my disk images in the past by corrupting them. When using it, it's best to simply copy over the files and not to do too much else (creating folders, deleting files & folders, etc) and always remember to quit ADFS before then using that disk image with an emulator - NEVER have the disk image open in both ADFS and KEGS or Sweet 16 at the same time!

BTW - even if you get transfer of files between your Mac and IIGS disk images, I doubt you'll be able to use the character data from the PC version of Ultima I working with the IIGS version.
