Well I tried contacting the author, it's two months later and no reply. I suspect even IF my e-mail is answered, I'll get the usual response that reclassification isn't possible due to bureaucratic red tape with Electronic Arts (who absorbed Origin Systems). Not that they necessarily hold the rights to the GS remake mind you.
It definitely is abandonware. I wouldn't have any objection seeing it archived on this site, nor would I have issue sharing a copy if someone asked. If a piece of software is out of print and indefinitely out of distribution, it is in danger of vanishing forever. One of the reasons this site exists is to prevent that.

Hi, Mitchell.
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my inquiry.
I wouldn't mind purchasing the software if it were still available, but since I posted here I've done another round of searching and still came up with nothing.
If you wouldn't mind sharing your copy with me, please e-mail me at <EDIT: removed e-mail address> to arrange the file transfer.
By the way, I agree with you that the software should be considered abandonware at this point.
Thanks again for your help with this! :)

I highly doubt it will ever be sold again. At best, we'll see Ultima 1 GS reclassified as freeware. At worst, it will remain in limbo like most other IIGS games.

Thanks a million, Mitchell!
