The Night Owl slide-on battery was a great replacement for ROM01 IIGS battery RAM. I'll never forget when our family got a IIGS in 1987 that we were warned that the battery would only last 5–10 years. I'm pretty sure ours lasted at least ten years. Anyway, the slide on battery enabled any user to add a new battery. You can add a battery yourself, but for the ROM01 model, you need to solder it to the existing clips.
The ROM03 doesn't require soldering or the Night Owl solution – you simply insert a new battery into the small enclosure reserved on the motherboard.
