The Conserver was originally designed and sold by MDIdeas. A power management, surge suppressor, cooling and space saving aid (allowing you to place up to two 3.5" disk drives inside it) the Conserver was stylish, matching the industrial design of the IIGS perfectly.
When MDIdeas (and it's software arm PBI Software) went bankrupt and ceased operations in 1988, at some point a year or two later, Applied Engineering started selling the Conserver again with their branding, but otherwise the product was cosmetically the same.
