02/04/2016: Celebrating Apple's 40th with Some Updates!
It's been 40 years since Apple first became an official company and naturally, we shouldn't expect too much fanfare from the company itself in regards to its previous efforts. So I'm hoping to spread a little curated IIGS content so we can remember that Apple wasn't always just a smart phone manufacturer.
Antoine Vignau (remember that guy?) has been able to procure and crack the rare 3.5" disk version of The Ancient Art of War. Hooray! He's also scanned the box for the title. That currently leaves Centauri Alliance, another official Broderbund release on 3.5" disk, to be archived to a working disk image. Write in if you can provide one.
Antoine's also sourced boxed copies of Blue Angels and Heatwave, two games from Accolade that got cancelled for the IIGS, and scanned the boxes which are now included in those archives. Alas, a working disk image for Heatwave has yet to be found. However, Antoine's done a bit of detective work and discovered that the programmer behind the Blue Angels conversion was Serve and Volley programmer Jeffrey J. Sigler. So we'll see if he's contactable and can shed any more light on those unreleased titles.
As always, follow Antoine on Twitter for his recent fresh cracks of IIGS software, which I will collate into this archive in the long term, but for now, will only be including the special cracks – you know, the ones that make a previously ROM03 incompatible title play friendly, or are now System 6 compatible or hard drive installable.
Also, Stavros Karatsoridis has uncovered HyperStudio Clip Art volumes 1 and 2 from Roger Wagner Publishing. Both disks include excellent 640 mode graphics, icons, animations for use in HyperStudio (or any other program that supports 640 mode graphics).
Thanks Stavros! We salute you!
26/01/2016: Skate or Die and Pirates now ROM03 compatible! Marble Madness can now be finished!
Antoine's been creating fresh cracks (all of which I hope to collate to include in this archive but at the moment I'm pressed for time as I've started the process of moving house) for IIGS games, apps and educational wares for which there have already been working cracks, but doing it again from Antoine's available original disks yields some pleasant results not previously available.
Skate or Die is now compatbile with the ROM03. Antoine's disassembled the program and tried to make code more efficient, but reassembling has resulted in a few issues themselves that will need more time to iron out. In the meantime however, we have a newly cracked version of the game that will now work on ROM03 machines, but will still need to booted from the early version of ProDOS 16 provided on the disk image. It's not System 6 compatible, that's for sure.
Additionally, a fresh crack of Marble Madness has been made. I'm particularly happy about this because in the last couple of years, I noticed that the game wasn't going to let you complete it because the disappearing bridges at the very end of the game wouldn't display properly - an obvious glitch, but caused by a bad crack or a bad disk that was cracked and then propagated? At any rate, it's now fixed. Alas, System 6 and hard drive installation compatibility is not likely to be forthcoming Antoine hinted.
Also, Pirates! now works on ROM03 IIGS. This is the Man-o-war version, and I received it a couple of years ago and I can't remember who submitted it! Anyway, the included docs state that this rewrite uses more memory if its available and doesn't require a separate save game disk. Undocumented, however, is that it also works on ROM03! Happy days!
I hope to report back on other enhanced versions of cracks as Antoine makes his way through cracking all his original IIGS disks...
19/01/2016: More Manuals and That's How You Finish Ancient Glory
To my surprise, I came across the fully packaged 5.25" disk editions of original Math Blaster and Spell It amongst my retro collection in storage in the old family home. I've scanned the boxes and the manuals for each of them, making them complete archives thanks to the 3.5" disk cracks provided by Antoine and 4am.
Additionally, I came across my manual for 816 Paint (adding to Andrew Roughan's earlier contribution of the 816 Teacher's Guide) and Renegade (the 8-bit version on 3.5" disk - if you know anything about the unreleased IIGS version, be sure to write in) and I've included them on the site as well.
Last but not least, fellow Australian McCaw has provided a complete walkthrough of the IIGS only game Ancient Glory. I've never managed to complete the game myself, finding it frustrating about the trial and error you have to endure to get anywhere near the end. In my case, seeing this made me realise that I could get a spear from Stymphalus and use that as a weapon against the horned underwater demi-god...I've said too much. Enjoy, but be prepared for some classic Australian colourful language ;-)
12/01/2016: Monte Carlo – now playing from System 6 and a Hard Drive Near You
Antoine's been doing overtime with a series new cracks from the originals of IIGS software that he has...which we'll be collecting on the site.
But in the meantime, here's not only a fresh crack for Monte Carlo, the 1987 casino simulation from PBI Software, but now it finally works from System 6, as well as a hard drive (although Antoine says it always worked from a large volume, although I never managed it from the previous crack still held in the archive). Antoine's disassembled the program with the Flaming Bird Disassembler, tweaked the code, and re-assembled with Merlin 32.
You can download the individual archive from the Monte Carlo page, or enjoy it from the Adventure and Simulation Games 32meg archive, complete with customised icon. You can always copy this version to your own hard drive image if you wish.
Hopefully Antoine can give this treatment to other titles, if the disassembled code isn't too messy to put back together again.
10/01/2016: Patented Late Christmas Presents
It's that time of year again where I plan to add content to What is the Apple IIGS? but am almost always late in doing so to tie it into some holiday cheer. Anyways, without further ado, we've got a load of new manual scans thanks to Antoine Vignau (who is this guy? never heard of him!):
MultiscribeGS (1987 and 1988), Design Your Own Home: Interiors (new, clearer scans), Music Studio v1.0 (in addition to the existing v2.0 manual), Teleworks GS, Talking Greek Mythology, Talking Addition & Subtraction, Talking Speller, Talking Classroom, Story Starters Science, The Whole Neighborhood, and Think Quick!
You'll find the manuals available as download links after the 2image download links for each title.
In our ever continuing quest to find and archive all known 8-bit software on 3.5" disk, with a current focus on Davidson Software titles, we've come across even more. Antoine keenly spotted original Math Blaster on eBay, bought it, cracked it and it's now imaged for the first time on 3.5" disk, that doesn't require any disk swapping of the original 5.25" disk release.
Thinking that was the last of the 3.5" disk releases for Davidson, 4am found Vocabulary Team Health & Science. Released in 1990, this puts it as one of the last Davidson titles. It's using the Word Attack Plus! engine for its content, so it's like a data disk. This prompted Antoine to take another look at cracking a title I found in 2014 called Reading Team People and Places and he's since been able to deprotect it. This one uses Read n Roll for an engine, so again, it seems to be a new data disk. But we haven't yet found any information on these two titles - if anyone can shed any light on them, let us know.
Antoine's also submitted a scan for the original Word Attack packaging, and visiting the old family home over Christmas, I was surprised to see I had fully boxed versions of original Math Blaster (5.25" edition) and Spell It! (5.25" edition) for which I've scanned the covers for. I hope to get round to scanning the manuals shortly. Speaking of which, I've been perusing the manuals for the 'Plus' series of Davidson titles and apparently the data disks that were available for Word Attack and Spell It! could also be used with the Plus versions...so I hope someone can archive those data disks out there!
I also got around to scanning my Drew ][ TDX stereo card and created an archive entry for it, including details on how to contact Drew if you're interested in one of these cards.
And this comes up all to often now that when a new year ticks over, news from years 2009 onwards isn't easily accessible via the site, which is a major oversight on my part, but I'd rather redo the site than keep adding band aids to it. One day. Anyway, to access old news, do so here:
